While the automakers and politicians are constantly saying that super efficient cars are still years away, one man tinkering in his garage has proven them wrong. Ron Gremban has modified his Toyota Prius with 18 brick-sized batteries, allowing him to plug in his car for additional power and to boost the fuel efficiency to 80 mpg. While Ron only spent $3000 on his modification, most similar hybrid upgrades aren’t nearly as cost effective. Although, those with much deeper pockets have been able to squeeze out over 250 mpg, proving the technology exists and the auto industry just needs to catch up.
