Ontario Doubles Tax Rebate for Hybrid Vehicles

Ontario is doubling the sales-tax rebate it offers to consumers who buy hybrid vehicles, from the previous maximum of $1000 per vehicle to $2000. While the environmental importance of the rebate is obvious, there are other reasons for the government of Ontario taking an estimated $1,000,000 hit to their tax treasury.

Ontario wants to maintain its strong industry role in the automotive sector in North America, and investing in green technology is a safe bet. While there are currently no hybrid vehicles manufactured in Canada, Ford plans to begin pumping out hybrid versions of the Lincoln MKX and Ford Edge by 2010, at the Oakville assembly complex west of Toronto.
