FIA to Test Why F1 Cars Crash After Wheel to Wheel Contact
Grandprix.com had an interesting little tidbit on the FIA - and I’m not making this up - planning to do tests to learn more about wheel over wheel accidents. You’re kidding right?
Nope, the news item said, “The FIA hopes that they [the tests] will reveal ways to stop cars flying after wheel-to-wheel impacts. The tests will also be used to simulate nose-to-wheel impacts.”
Results of the test could determine rule changes to the front wings of Formula 1 cars. I should call them and offer to help; it would take about 10 seconds to explain. They are open wheeled cars, the wheels are rolling in opposite directions when they hit each other, and one has to go in the air - end of story.
As for the solution, they’re called “bumpers”.
