Ferrari Celebrates 60th Birthday with Special 612

It’s hard to believe that legendary sports car maker Ferrari has been around for 60 years, and in that time has created a name for itself as the one to beat on the track and on the street. To celebrate the occasion, Ferrari is building a special, limited edition version of the 612 Scaglietti called Sessanta, which is Italian for “60”.

The 612 Sessanta is all about the details. Each one of these special cars comes equipped with all the technologically advanced equipment that the brand offers on the standard car, including the F1A sequential paddleshift gearbox, CCM carbon ceramic discs and the Manettino for selecting Sport and Comfort modes. From the outside, it doesn’t really speak its status in terms of visual volume, sporting 19-inch “monolithic” alloy wheels, and unique brightwork around the front.

The interior of the Sessanta can be described as nothing less than a handcrafted, leather-swathed extravaganza. Almost all surfaces in the cabin are covered by special Frau leather that is stitched in a quilted pattern. The instruments found on the Sessanta are unique to the model with white-faced gauges instead of the standard black-faced ones.

This new 612 is also a step up in terms of technology, featuring a brand new Bose infotainment system, which integrates a new navigation system with a reverse camera plus a TV tuner. That’s right, when the car’s not in gear, occupants can watch live television on the car’s screen. We wouldn’t be surprised if this Bose system eventually became available on the regular 612 and other Ferraris as this sort of device is a staple in the high-end luxury car industry.

But what really sets this particular 612 apart from others is its roof. Instead of the usual fixed metal roof that the regular car comes with, this one features the same type of electrochromic clear glass as the limited edition 575 Superamerica did. The glass panels that form the skylight are capable of dimming to three different positions to let in different levels of light, ranging from opaque to completely translucent, bathing the interior in natural light. Unlike the Superamerica, the roof doesn’t flip over, so there’s no more of a wind in your hair experience than the regular 612.

With a car such as the Sessanta helping to celebrating this special event, you’d expect there to be a limited production volume and indeed, there is. Ferrari will only produce 60 units of this particular 612, and buyers can choose between two colours, Grigio Scuro (pictured) and Rubino Micalizzato. Both colour choices are two-toned, with the highlight colour being used to accentuate the hood, pillars and roof, while the rest of the car is painted in gloss black. Because of the extensive specification and the rarity of this model, buyers should be prepared to shell out a lot more.
