Biofuel Comes With a Huge Price Tag

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

AlterNet has a very interesting article addressing the concerns and possible pitfalls of moving to a biofuel based system. It may not be the environmental saviour that it appears on the surface, and may do nothing more than divert profits from existing oil providers to new economic interests.

“But the tremendous market power of agro-fuel corporations, coupled with weak political will of governments to regulate their activities, is a recipe for environmental disaster and increasing hunger in the global South. It’s time to examine the myths fueling this biofuel boom — before it’s too late.”

The writer makes some very interesting points and builds a compelling case as to why we need to keep a close eye on how we manage the future growth of the booming agro-fuel industry.
